As I mentioned last week I spent four days on a short break ‘up north’ with the family to celebrate a birthday. It was blissful so of course i’m going to share some of the fun times with you. Be warned this post is mainly going to be about the pictures, because that’s what I like best and honestly I don’t write well enough to describe my adventures and the beauty of The Peaks half as well as my pictures do!
So my trip went a little bit like this…
Road Trip! Queue good music, lots of talking and picking the service station we stop at depending on the coffee available. Hence the 16 miles of crossing my legs in order to go to a Starbucks!
Arriving in Sheffield to skip down the hill and meet the youngest Evans sister. Then touring her house before setting off to Bolsover Castle.
Promptly falling in love with Bolsover. Cooing over wall paintings, cute windows and fallen down ruins. And taking lots of pictures of course – the magic of smart phones!
Somehow finding our way into Matalan and exiting 90 minutes later with lots of purchases. You’d think that my sisters, Mum and I would have learnt not to shop together by now!
Heading into the Peak District and discovering the lovely town of Bakewell.
Eating the best lasagne ever (thanks Mum)
Training it to Leeds to have lunch with one of my favouritest people in the world. Lots of talking, lots of eating and lots of laughing!
Discovering the Chestnut Centre a conservation and wildlife park. A lovely long walk around the place and seeing otters, deers and owls. Along with pole cats, pine martens and field mice. Seriously if you are ever in the area go check it out.
Also if you are there then stop in at The Beehive pub in Combs for lunch – totally delicious grub.
I also managed to fit in a run – I know I was surprised too. But having my Dad there made me do it and it was great fun. I left my headphones at home and we chatted away for a three mile explore around Bakewell. I, of course, had to stop a couple of times for photos as we saw rainbows. Yes we ran in the rain.
The other plus point of going for a run was that I didn’t feel too guilt over the amount I ate (and drank) that evening! We headed to another lovely foodie place recommended by our neighbours. The Pointed Dog and Duck in Bakewell town. Checkout the trip advisor views here. Another excellent meal and the perfect place to celebrate Becca’s birthday. Plus she loved all her presents. One of which I made myself! So will be sharing soon.
We of course managed to fit in more board game time. Like that was ever not going to happen!
Our final day started with a walk, then a trip to Costco before a long drive home. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend away with my family.
Honestly it’s trips like these that I live for. So much fun, full on relaxing and surrounding yourself with people that get you.
Let us move away from the animals now before I buy myself a kitten or something!
I went running the other night and managed four miles quite easily. I’m not sure how or why seeing as lately two miles has been hideously hard work. But I did it and I’m so pleased. It’s been a bright spark in an otherwise miserable week and it makes me feel a hell of a lot better about my upcoming 10km!
Also, one final thing – this is my 200 blog post – how crazy cakes is that? It’s been (almost) a year since I set up this little blog space so the fact that I have written 200 posts shouldn’t seem so crazy – yet it does. Truthfully though, I’ve loved every single post. Hope you have too.
I love bank holidays, only having to work four days is amazing. Well actually I had Friday afternoon off too so it was really only 3.5 – Yay me! And okay I had to make up that afternoon time but that was super easy doing 45 mins each day – as long as I have coffee then I’m functioning totally normally! Anyways without further waffle here is my week in pictures…
I am currently super relaxed thanks to the wonderfulness that is a British Bank Holiday. I’m going to ignore the fact that this is the last weekend of August and instead focus on the three day I have off instead! This is actually the first weekend for months where I have had no plans, yes I’m actually serious and can I just say it have been absolutely blissful. I wish it would last forever. So here’s what I’ve been up to…
Using my new mouse pad from the Paperchase sale. It certainly brightens up my desk at work Catching up on The Newsroom in anticipation for the new series.
Catching up with my oldest friends with a long lazy evening snacking, chatting and drinking green tea Baking and icing whoopie pies, check out the recipe here
Packing into tupperware
Running and then collapsing on the sofa to watch The Great British Bake Off Walking to and from work on the same day – 2 hours of walking – I must be mad!
Drinks and dinner with lovely work people – there were less of us than anticipated but that didn’t dampen the fun at all. First there was cocktails during happy hour before soaking up some alcohol with a trip to Five Guys – a review will follow soon. I love working around Covent Garden!
Cocktails in jam jars
the little bacon cheeseburger and fries
Avoiding the rain by running on the treadmill at the gym. Convincing Fi that she should try a Ramen dish at Wagamamas
Watching Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince with oreos and a quilt while feeling sorry for my ill self on the sofa. Meeting my Dad for brunch/lunch in Clapham before a Starbucks and some shopping to add to my monthly budget post.
And now i’m watching Lord of Rings while blogging and procrastinating over whether to run or not.
Hope you are all having a lovely long weekend too.
It’s that time again where I share my favourite bits and bobs from this week…
Firstly I booked tickets to see Wakey! Wakey! and Ron Pope in London when they’re touring next year – queue huge excited squeals! Since booking the tickets I have obviously been listening to a lot of music from both of these artists and I can’t wait for the new Wakey album so that I can get learning the new songs. To be honest February can’t come soon enough now!
Next I’m loving the Thank You – #YouAreFootball – Barclays Premier League 2013 advert. I first saw it on Saturday when I was waiting for the Swansea Vs. Man Utd match to start, but I’ve watched it online plenty of times since. It just gives me goosebumps and it’s possible that the little old man might just make me teary eyed!
This week the skin and blister (fyi that means sister in cockney rhyming slang) wrote this lovely post about our Grandma. It’s the kind of post I wish I could write but whenever I try my words get all jumbled up. For now I’ll happily read Fi’s words instead.
Has anyone else tried the Twix mix chocolates yet? The sis and I picked up a sharing bag at the beginning of the week and we have been steadily making our way through them all week. They’re so good and very moreish. Now nom nom!
It’s always good to know that I’m not the only one who has problems buying trousers. Check out Fran’s trouser review here and be pleased that it’s not just you! This is exactly why I always buy dresses!
Also I noticed this week that I’ve hit the 100 mile mark with my running this year. Since the middle of January I’ve been using the Nike+ app to help me keep track of things and as of August 20th I have run 112.7 miles. It’s actually more than that as I am still waiting for the Nike+ help team to upload data that didn’t sync properly, apparently I didn’t run at all in March – but let’s ignore that before I get annoyed at the slowness that is their customer service! So a hip hip hooray for me for running that far in the last seven months.
And finally I’m hooked already on The Great British Bake Off. Love it, love it, love it.
